Escape the Ordinary: 5 of Katie’s Favorite International Summer Adventures
Summer beckons, and the world awaits! But with so many options, where do you begin? Katie McFerrin, Owner of McFerrin Real Estate, and her family have traveled to over 30 countries. This year, ditch the usual, ignite your wanderlust and create memories that last a lifetime:
1. Farm Stay in Southern Italy:
In the heel of Italy's boot is Puglia. Near olive orchards and wine vineyards our family stayed in a traditional dry stone hut called a trullo. Fresh eggs for breakfast and then walk to the ocean to stack rocks at the beach. A highlight was the pasta making class and five course dinner we shared with nonna - a lovely little grandma who spoke almost no English. Rome, Florence, Venice - all amazing! But if you're' looking for something a little more rustic and off the beaten path, check out Puglia (but don't let the secret out too much).
2. New Zealand: Epic Scenery Awaits
Our trip to New Zealand started in beautiful Queenstown in the south. We toured the Milford Sound by boat and then rented a campervan and traveled for two weeks to Auckland, the capital city in the north. We couldn't get enough of epic hiking, breathtaking scenery, and even saw penguins!
3. Island Bliss in Bali
In Bali we explored the artistic town of Ubud and did a bike tour through ancient villages still practicing traditional rice harvesting. A short ferry ride to the small island of Gili was recommended by a local that we couldn't pass up. Crystal blue waters and no cars - all public transportation is by donkey drawn carts.
4. Unveiling Zihuatanejo, Mexico:
If you've ever vacationed in a large resort like those in Cancun, this is nothing like that. Zihuatanejo is a quiet fishing village nestled on Mexico's Pacific Coast. Lots of local vibes and low-key activities. Perfectly warm water, gentle waves and massages on the beach for the whole family for 25 dollars. Doug and Grady grabbed some fresh fish for dinner while deep sea fishing. Chips, guac, margarita... say no more!
5. Iberian Delights: Portugal
We started our Portugal adventure in Lisbon, getting lost in it's endless charming neighborhoods and shopping districts. Then for 10 days we drove from tip to tip and expolred the medieval city and cobbled streets of Porto in the north and the relaxing Algarve beaches in the south. When we have time on our travels, we like to combine big-city energy with off-the-beaten path experiences to find something for everyone!
This is just a taste of the incredible experiences that await. No matter your travel style or interests, these destinations offer something for everyone. So, pack your bags, grab your sense of adventure, and get ready to create a summer story that will leave you breathless!
